Aug. 18, 2008

Anthony Dixon/WENN
ABC NEWS - Jennifer Lopez is known to the world as many things - a singer, actress, designer and entrepreneur - but six months after adding "mother" to that list, the 39-year-old is taking on yet another daunting challenge.

The pop singer is training for a triathlon, just six months after giving birth.Months after giving birth to twins Max and Emme with husband Marc Anthony, Lopez plans to run, swim and bike her way around Malibu at the 22nd Annual Malibu Triathlon next month.

Putting such passion and drive into every aspect of her life, from her family to her career and now athletics, is one reason Self magazine recently named Lopez its most inspiring woman of the year.

"It came up when I was eight months pregnant, when I was beached like a whale," Lopez told "Good Morning America." "I was watching TV, and I saw a triathlon and I said, 'I think I could do that.' ... Maybe we could raise some money and do something really great."

Just three months pregnant with her first child, Aabha Brown is already feeling the angst of an expecting mom just in time for Mother's Day.

None of her clothes fit.

"This is not the time to retreat into feeling fat and ugly,'' says Brown, director of cultural health initiatives for the American Heart Association. "It's much different now than when my mom was pregnant and had no options.''

Brown has been pleased with the assortment of fashions for pregnant women but says she's looking forward to the months ahead.

"Things naturally shift as your body gets prepared, so you want to feel good in what you're wearing,'' she said. "The in-between stage has been the hardest because you're not too far along for maternity, but none of your clothes fit. I already have a swimsuit picked out for the summer.''

At Pickles & Ice Cream, owner Dawn Wilson says there are many Mother's Day gift options for expecting moms. Her favorites are stylish pajamas - not muumuus - because many women "won't buy them themselves.'' Prices are $49-$99.

She also sells novelty T-shirts with sayings such as "Say Hello to My Little Friend'' (shown above) and "I Can Grow People'' at $40-$69. And the Hot Slings pouch ($47-$63), a sling to carry a baby in the fetal position comfortably against the mother's body, is a huge seller.

"Really, you should celebrate and feel special every day,'' Wilson said. "Be it a first-time mom or a mom on her second or third child, it's a day to celebrate.'' - Read more at Chron.com

Boob Goes To Hollywood

Boob Maternity Brings Out Celebumoms’ Curves

By Natasha Burton - Angelina Jolie, Jessica Alba, Tori Spelling, Minnie Driver, Lisa Marie Presley and Camila Alves (Matthew McConaughey's girlfriend) got early Mother's Day gifts this year-clothing from chic line Boob Maternity.

Boob was created in the winter of 1999 when founder Mia Seipel saw her sister nurse her newborn baby in a park in Stockholm, waist bare to the icy northern wind. She decided it should be every mother's right to nurse in comfort and in style. The solution was Boob Nursing--a Swedish patented innovation that will make you look great. Being pregnant with her first child gave Mia inspiration to expand into a line of clothing, and so Boob Maternity was born. No doubt, celebumoms like Angelina and Jessica, will enjoy wearing this line during their pregnancy, and afterwards, when they're nursing,
too. - Read more at ModernMom.com

Boob's big Hollywood-breakthrough happened when actress
Minnie Driver was spotted by the daily paper Metro, wearing our popular tie-back dress. We're therefore very happy to announce that we still have this style in stock!

Gestational Diabetes Hits the Tabloids.

Credit: Drummond-Young/Splash News Online
According to reports, Angelina Jolie is suffering from “gestational diabetes.” The actress is believed to be pregnant with twins. Sources claim she is having a rough pregnancy.

Whether these reports are true, or not, it got us thinking.

Should you be concerned about gestational diabetes?

The short answer: Yes.
Good care means a lot for your health and your baby's health.

What is gestational diabetes?

Pregnant women who have never had diabetes before but who have high blood sugar (glucose) levels during pregnancy are said to have gestational diabetes. Gestational diabetes affects about 4% of all pregnant women - about 135,000 cases of gestational diabetes in the United States each year.

We don't know what causes gestational diabetes, but we have some clues. The placenta supports the baby as it grows. Hormones from the placenta help the baby develop. But these hormones also block the action of the mother's insulin in her body. This problem is called insulin resistance. Insulin resistance makes it hard for the mother's body to use insulin. She may need up to three times as much insulin.

Gestational diabetes starts when your body is not able to make and use all the insulin it needs for pregnancy. Without enough insulin, glucose cannot leave the blood and be changed to energy. Glucose builds up in the blood to high levels. This is called hyperglycemia.

How gestational diabetes can affect your baby

Gestational diabetes affects the mother in late pregnancy, after the baby's body has been formed, but while the baby is busy growing. Because of this, gestational diabetes does not cause the kinds of birth defects sometimes seen in babies whose mothers had diabetes before pregnancy.

Greenville's Katie Darby Gives the Scoop...

Time for a change

Maternity fashions catch up with today’s trendy moms-to-be

change.jpg

By Cheryl P. Allen • STAFF WRITER • March 27, 2008 • GreenvilleOnline.com

Who says you can’t be pregnant and fashionable at the same time? Today’s mothers-to-be don’t have to fret about looking stylish.

Maternity clothes have evolved drastically over the years, adding flair and elegance to pregnancy, said Katie Darby, owner of Pickles & Ice Cream on Augusta Road.

Darby, who opened her store eight years ago, said she was inspired by conversations with pregnant friends who were frustrated over trying to find trendy clothing for their changing bodies. “I actually opened the store before I had children,” said Darby, now a mother of three young children. “So then, when I did have babies, I had something to wear.”

In the past, options were very limited, Darby said. “It was always a season or two behind the regular women’s fashion. Everything was very loose, big, long panels ... extremely frumpy, a lot of button-up tops and not much fun. You had to completely change your style and just wear what pregnant people wore. Now you don’t have to change your style.”

Cravings Baffle the Best of Us...

Food cravings has even the celebs baffled

Courtesy of Easier.com

(March 25, 2008) - Reports this week revealed that pregnant Cate Blanchett is experiencing cravings for pickles and ice cream, making her one of the estimated 68% of pregnant women experiencing similar unusual food hankerings.

What some might not know is that these cravings can reveal a lack of certain nutrients, such as olives potentially indicating a lack of sodium and cheese a common sign of calcium, phosphorous and aluminium deficiency. Amongst other such desires, some pregnant women experience irrepressible cravings for chocolate and this could mean that you may be slightly anaemic (lacking in iron). Dark chocolate in particular, can be a useful source of magnesium and iron, whereas milk chocolate actually tends to inhibit the absorption of iron.

With this in mind there is a resource available for pregnant women to sort the nutritional facts from the fiction - the ‘Guide to healthy eating in pregnancy'. Produced in association with Midwife Maggie Evans by natural iron-rich water supplement, Spatone, the guide contains concise information for mothers-to-be on why healthy eating is important for their unborn baby, how much to eat, what particular cravings mean and which foods to avoid during pregnancy.

We are loving... Mama Mio!!

 Meet our new obsession.

It's a little treat called Tummy Rub Oil, by Mama Mio.

And, it's fabulous... Pregnant, or not!

tummyruboil.jpg

Pickles & Ice Cream was lucky enough to have met with the National Sales Manager for MamaMio, (she's a jewel by the way), and she gave us an awesome presentation on their products. We are so pumped about this stuff, that we want to share everything that we learned with all of you.

She made a good point...

We will spend $200 on a piece of clothing that we wear occasionally,
but we are hesitant to spend money on something we wear every day...
Our skin.

"Mama Mio Tummy Rub Stretch Mark Oil is a super nourishing blend of the richest and most healing oils available. It absorbs quickly, leaving your skin feeling soft and nourished but not at all greasy. It super-hydrates your taut tummy to add elasticity, sparing you itchy belly syndrome and helping you win the battle against stretch marks. We offer an oil alongside our Tummy Rub Stretch Mark Butter as your skin naturally produces oil and therefore it is easily recognised and used. Every ingredient in Tummy Rub Stretch Mark Oil has a distinct moisturising purpose and is laden with Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs) - Omegas 3, 6 & 9. Combined with our non-nauseating Gravida fragrance it is a tremendous stretch mark fighter.

The decision between Tummy Rub Stretch Mark Oil and Stretch Mark Butter is entirely yours. Do you prefer an oil or a butter they are both equally powerful at fighting stretch marks.
